George Klahre graduated with honors from the University of Denver in 1973 with a degree in economics. Post-graduate study in urban and regional planning was planned until an offer was tendered by Neuberger Berman in New York for an investment banking trainee position. Shortly after being hired, the banking platform that Mr. Klahre was working with transferred to W.E. Hutton and Co., where he ultimately became an institutional equity salesman.
In 1975, an institutional client offered a position in its trust investment division. That bank, a Chase subsidiary, elevated Mr. Klahre to head of the employee benefits division during his tenure and he became the bank’s ERISA specialist after receiving certification from the New Jersey Division of Banking. He also co-managed the bank’s co-mingled equity and bond funds.
In 1979, at the urging of a number of clients, Mr. Klahre formed his own firm, which specialized in employee benefit programs for closely held businesses as well as financial planning for owners and key employees. In the early 1980’s, Mr. Klahre received the Certified Financial Planner™ (CFP) and expanded his business to corporate executives, family wealth management and estate planning. In 1983, Mr. Klahre merged his growing business with Executive Planning Associates to form a fee-only financial planning firm catering to Fortune 500 senior executives and family offices. Services provided included income, trust and estate tax management, estate and trust services, gifting, investment portfolio strategies and wealth transfer.
Along with his former partner, Frank O. Ramsay, Jr., the business grew dramatically over the next 15 years. During that period, the role of life insurance in estate planning for the wealthy emerged as an integral ingredient in many client plans. After studying the programs presented by many life insurance professionals and not being satisfied with contemporary design elements of then current life products, Mr. Klahre embarked on a program of working with life companies and significant brokerages to custom tailor plans to client needs.
Over time, the expertise created from designing client life insurance programs was recognized by legal, accounting and management firms. In the early 2000’s, it became obvious that branching out into life insurance consulting was a natural outgrowth of the planning business. While he retains a number of clients, who are friends as well as clients, Mr. Klahre and Spectrum Financial Solutions, LLC now specializes in working with other professionals and their wealthy clients to achieve logical solutions to complicated financial issues. The interdisciplinary approach to planning and wealth management that he has developed during his career has enabled Mr. Klahre to work with many nationally recognized experts in the fields of tax, investment advisory, insurance and law. He is a frequent author and speaker on insurance and planning topics.
